Is the Health and the Humanities certificate for pre-health students?
The Health and the Humanities certificate is open to ALL undergraduates, but may be of special interest to students pursuing careers in health care.
Will this “look good” for a health professions program?
A certificate is a way to organize breadth courses and electives around a theme, and shows intellectual sophistication. The Health and the Humanities certificate allows you to focus this work on historical, cultural, and philosophical reasons why people interact with health care systems in certain ways, and it allows you to take things you learn in the classroom and apply them by serving others through a service learning course. There is an emphasis on cultural competency, synthesis of ideas, and writing, and these are highly valued by health professions. You should pursue this certificate if you wish to develop these qualities, and share the values of your intended profession.
How many hours a week is the service learning class?
The service component of the class is ~10 hours/week in addition to the class.
Does the service learning class qualify for patient contact hours for PA programs?
In general, experiences that qualify toward patient contact hours have responsibility for patient care.
If I’ve already taken an ethnic studies class, can that count for the “Cultural Competency” portion of the certificate?
Maybe. Some, but not all, of the courses that meet the ethnic studies distribution requirement also meet the “Cultural Competency” requirement for the certificate. If the ethnic studies class you have taken appears on the “Cultural Competency” list in the Guide, then you do not need to take another class.
I’m really interested in all of the core courses! Will any of the courses “count” for the “Health and Illness in a Social Context” requirement?
No. The introductory courses are a foundation for more advanced work that you will take in the intermediate and advanced level courses in the “Health and Illness in a Social Context” category.
Can I take both the Global Health certificate and the Health and the Humanities certificate?
No. The Undergraduate Certificate in Global Health may not be earned in combination with the Undergraduate Certificate in Health and the Humanities.
I've taken a humanities course about health, but it's not on the certificate course list. Can it count for HatH credit?
If you have taken a course not listed on the HatH Certificate course list which you think fulfills the spirit of a certificate requirement, you may apply for an exception. If you’re granted an exception, the course in question will count towards a HatH Certificate requirement and the 15 credits required to complete the certificate. To apply for an exception, please send the course syllabus and a paragraph explaining why you think the course meets the spirit of a specific certificate requirement to the HatH advisor at hathadvisor@english.wisc.edu. Further documentation may be required upon request. Exceptions are rarely granted for the core course requirement.
